Hey Martell DB, welcome to BuzzMusic! Can you start by telling us more about your upbringing and how you got started in hip-hop?
I grew up listening to Hip Hop music and watched a lot of music videos growing up. When I was about 8, I started writing music and said I would be a rapper. By the time I was a sophomore in high school, I thought I would like being a producer way better and I did for awhile. But then I began recording a few songs after college and people around me encouraged me to do both.
Who are some of your musical influences? How do they help shape your sound?
As an Artist, I would say Jay-Z, J. Cole, and LL Cool J are major influences on my style. As a producer Drumma Boy, Dr. Dre, and Timbaland are my musical influences on the production side. I study Cole, Jay, and LL the most because they have a style that I admire and can see myself in those styles. As far as production, I studied Drumma Boy the most in the early stages of me starting to make beats. I learned a lot about arrangement, and dynamics in a song just by listening to his production.
What’s the meaning behind your lyrics in “You Got That”? What inspired this song?
The meaning behind the lyrics in “You Got That” is basically finally getting the woman you’ve been wanting and you both are taking things to an intimate level. The inspiration behind the song came to me two years ago during an intimate night with my girlfriend at the time.
What's the overall theme of your EP “Goals”?
The theme behind Goals is inspiring people to actually set and accomplish whatever they put their minds to. Whether it be relationship goals, goals to make them a better person or the biggest thing I mention throughout the project which is quitting their job to follow their dreams. This project has something for almost everyone to be motivated by.
What’s next for you?
Putting on shows with my crew “YAL,” as well as my own shows, working on new music for myself, and producing for artist like Mr. Wade, Can, RichDaPitt, and many more. Plus I will be posting more beats to my website for artist to purchase. I’m also looking to work with other dope artists as well, let's work.
