Thank you for sharing your music with us Whitney. Mind telling our readers a bit about your background and upbringing?
I’ve been writing music since I was about 13. I grew up in a small town in Connecticut where music was not “cool.” I needed a change and so I moved to New York where here I was able to be myself and actually flourish musically. And now I am about to graduate a performing arts high school in Manhattan called Laguardia.
What inspired you to pursue music?
When I was 13, a friend I only knew from social media told me she was going to kill herself. I didn’t even know what this meant at that age, but I sat down and just started writing a poem for her that then turned into a song called Ghost Story. I sent her this and truly didn’t expect a response, but to my surprise, she said that it saved her life and inspired her to get therapy. So once I helped one person with music, I realized I could help so many more. I started writing like every day since then.
How would you describe your songwriting approach?
My songwriting approach varies every time I write really. I get inspired from various things that happen to me, I see, hear, even smell sometimes. I write random one liner lyrics in my phone and in this little notebook I always carry around every day. Or, I sit down at the piano, guitar, even on production apps on my phone to create the music portion of what I write.
We loved “Little Bit More” and the meaning behind this. In what ways were you able to personally relate to the song?
I think anyone can relate to Little Bit More. This song is for anyone who’s been in a relationship in which they care way more than the other person. I wrote this after a relationship I had where I just needed a little bit more from the person.
What’s next for you?
I’m writing every day and recording as much of it as possible. I have a song called Care coming out in a few weeks that I’m so excited for followed by a song called Sad Love that I think is my favorite song I’ve ever written. So a lot of new music is to come!
