The world’s abrupt cultural shift and closure during the pandemic saw him lock in while life seemingly came to a standstill. He would double down on his craft, leading to the release of his similarly well-received sophomore album, Suburban Rap Music, in June 2020, followed swiftly by Nothing New that July. His prolific output continued with the 2021’s “Westwood” and his latest, most successful album, 2022’s “Over 21.”
As the opening act for his hotly anticipated album “No More Cigarettes,” Newbury’s new release “Route 9” would always be held to a high standard. He’s managed to meet and exceed those, however, with “Route 9” becoming a standout release in its own right.
Utilizing slightly more laid-back instrumentals, Newbury creates an introspective soundscape, making self-reflective lyrics like “Got a tray on the side/hella ash in my ride” just hit differently. It’s the perfect opening salvo and, perhaps even more fittingly, feels like the perfect vibe for a late-night drive.
