The Hourglass Effect Lets The “Sunlight” Shine Through The Dark

The Hourglass Effect is back, and they’re bringing the heat with their latest single, “Sunlight.”

This track is a vibrant blend of punk rock, jazz, and country influences—a genre-fusing masterpiece that only a band as dynamic as The Hourglass Effect could pull off. Following the success of their self-titled debut album, which racked up over 5 million streams, “Sunlight” is the anthem we’ve been waiting for.

From the first strum, “Sunlight” grabs your attention with its eclectic mix of sounds, showcasing the band’s ability to push genre boundaries while keeping their signature rock vibe intact. Drew’s songwriting shines through, laying the foundation for a track that’s both introspective and uplifting. Erin’s vocals take center stage, weaving a tapestry of raw and polished emotion reminiscent of legends like Stevie Nicks and Florence Welch.

The production, handled by Dave Hardman, elevates the song to new heights, blending traditional rock elements with innovative twists. The result is a track that’s as energetic as it is thought-provoking. The lyrics dive deep into themes of mental recovery and emotional resilience, making “Sunlight” not just a song but an experience that resonates on multiple levels.

The beauty of “Sunlight” lies in its ability to make you feel every note, every beat, and every word. It’s a reminder that no matter how dark things get, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. The Hourglass Effect has crafted a track that’s not just about surviving but thriving—and they’ve done it with style, passion, and an infectious energy that’s impossible to ignore.

If you’re looking for a song that blends heart, soul, and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll, “Sunlight” is your next obsession.

Welcome to Buzz, The Hourglass Effect! Congrats on the release of your latest track, "Sunlight." Your unique sound is captivating in its energy. What inspired you to merge these genres, and how did the fusion shape the final sound of the track?

Thank you. The Hourglass Effect appreciates the opportunity for this interview with you all. We are also very excited about our new song, Sunlight, and the forthcoming new EP, which will be released in November. Our songs just happen organically. I just mess around on the guitar until my ears pick up on something that sounds song-worthy. Then, I just really relax and let it just come to me. I rarely try to push or try too hard on the guitar. Growing up on punk rock in the late 80’s and early 90’s really influenced me. Then, when I saw The Grateful Dead for the first time in the 90s, I was like, “holy cow,’ and it really changed my life. All of these things just organically arise when I lounge and play the guitar.

We love how the lyrics of "Sunlight" explore themes of mental recovery and emotional resilience. Can you share any personal experiences or stories that influenced the songwriting process?

I checked myself into a rehab facility in order to prepare myself for the unknown and to calm down a very active mind. I needed to detach and really focus on my inner self after a divorce. I felt lost, sad, confused, and alone. As I started to decompress and feel stronger, this song really began to fall into place. I started to understand just how fortunate we all are to be alive and how thankful we should be for friends and family. I began to see the glass as half full and how to bask in the glory of a great life.

What was the creative process like in the studio, and how did you decide on the final arrangement?

I owe everything to producer Dave and vocalist Erin. Dave and I laid down the demo, and I sang the song at that time. We changed the key to match Erin’s voice and tone. We slowly but surely worked on this song and the rest of the album for a few years in the studio between albums. Dave added tons of great ideas, including the keyboard. Erin worked hard on the vocals. Patience and persistence are key! Tons of hours and hard work.

How do you hope listeners will connect with the song, and what impact do you want it to have on your audience?

We really hope that this song has a positive impact on the people that listen to it. We hope that people understand that they are not alone and that seeking support is the strong thing to do. People can change, people can recover, and dancing in the sunlight feels a heck of a lot better than lying in the darkness.

As a band that has evolved since its formation in 2017, what does "Sunlight" represent in terms of your growth as artists, and how does it set the stage for the future of The Hourglass Effect?

We are very thankful for the first album and learned so much from that process. Sunlight is an evolution in our style. It represents the general idea that the sky's the limit and that we can all achieve happiness and our dreams. There are no constraints, no rules, no excuses. Music represents freedom and we feel like Sunlight is a perfect example of this fact.
