Based in Los Angeles is a talented electronic duo, Singer & the Scientist. Featuring the driving vocals of Kenley Shea and the quirky synthesis creations of Steve Channell. S&TS was born in the valley of Los Angeles in 2014, when the two met coincidentally as next door neighbors in a small LA apartment complex. Coming from opposite music backgrounds, it’s no surprise they faced trials and tribulations to create their first song. . After a few failed song attempts, they pressed on to write their first single “Notice Me”. This began their journey together to find their unique sound as Singer & the Scientist. Following up on their debut album, “Electric Heartbreak”, S&TS is releasing a string of new singles, which take a sharp turn from the previous record. Authenticity is always on the forefront of Singer & the Scientist’s mind as they write, record, and perform. They pay homage to the driving sounds of 80’s synth-pop and bands like Sylvan Esso, Chvrches, and St. Vincent.
Singer & the Scientist dropped a brand new music video for their track “In My Head”. We were immediately greeted by the overwhelming presence of 80’s synth-pop, personified. Through their authentic sound and spectacular visuals, “In My Head” makes waves in the music scene. The chemistry and amusement is easily seen within the music video. Singer & the Scientist provide a track where the rhythm and the finish are superb. Wonderfully nostalgic for those who knew the club sound of the nineties and earlier, and yet somehow exciting enough to securely fit in among today’s creative world. The artistry of this project offers something that hasn’t quite been captured to this extent in a long time. I highly recommend you check out this hard-hitting music video for “In My Head”.

Hi Singer & the Scientist! What advice would you give to yourselves when you first started writing music, now?
(Steve) - Don’t chase trends. Figure out who you are and work hard to make it something you feel good about regardless of what other people are doing. That way there’s satisfaction in the journey regardless of the destination.
(Kenley) - Don’t try and fit your piece of talent into someone else puzzle, just because it’s convenient or others expect you to. Enjoy the freedom to take your puzzle piece and explore where that puzzle piece actually fits, no matter how long it takes.
Can you tell us about the meaning behind the lyrics in “In My Head”?
(Kenley) - “In My Head” shows a journey of intense dependance on something or someone that trumps the couragiousness to leave your comfort zone. Against all the crystal clear proofs and all the good reasons to leave that toxic lifestyle or relationship, you simply shrug your shoulders and dive head first into the very thing you know is going to hold you captive. And it will hold you there. It will consume your thoughts, steal all your self-love, and leave you powerless to its appearance of necessity.
Can you tell us more about the concept behind the visuals for “In My Head”?
(Steve) - We wanted to counter any perceived weakness or failure that is sometimes associated with expressing difficulties in a relationship. Instead, reflecting on the power, control, and overall bad ass confidence that it takes to open up. Visually, we shot it all on a 90’s Hi8 camera because we like the look and it’s still very affordable to do. It’s also a ton of fun. We’re independent and do everything on own budget, so this gave us some flexibility to do something artistic and indie without having to resort to an iPhone. We shot the throne parts in my apartment and the rest of the music parts in an artist owned warehouse in downtown LA.
What do you hope your listeners take away from the “In My Head” music video?
(Steve) - I hope it takes them to a fun place for those few minutes and that they pick up on some of the not so obvious details we put in the video.
(Kenley) - When I watch it, I feel this amazing sense of nostagia of sitting on my neighbors couch as a kid in the early 90’s and watching my favorite bands on MTV. I’m hoping others can experience that little bit of throwback magic too.
What are your career goals for the remainder 2019? We’d love to hear your ideas!
(Steve) - We’ve been working with some old and new friends on some remixes that will be releasing soon which we are excited about, it will be the first time we’ve ever done that. They are a lot of fun!
