Serinity’s “Went to New York” Is a Soul-Searching Pop Gem

A shimmering indie-pop anthem lives amongst us, and it takes heartbreak, packs it in a suitcase, and sets it free among the bright lights of the Big Apple.

Drawing from her own experience of finding herself after a breakup, Serinity crafts a song that’s equal parts self-reflection and celebration. "Went to New York" is the ultimate ode to reclaiming your identity, one cab ride and coffee stop at a time.

From her ethereal vocals drawing you in, expect to be wrapped around delicately layered harmonies that feel as if they’re floating in the clouds. Her storytelling is razor-sharp yet tender, painting vivid pictures of solo strolls through Central Park and the internal dialogues of self-discovery.

What's great about the instrumentation is that each production element leans into her indie-pop sensibilities with an undeniable mainstream appeal, making this the perfect canvas to create within.

What sets "Went to New York" apart is Serinity’s ability to let her music have fun, even when dealing with heavy emotions. The juxtaposition of airy melodies and profound lyrics captures the bittersweet beauty of rediscovering joy after pain, and paired with playful defiance in her delivery, it serves as a reminder that even when life feels heavy, there’s power in learning to carry yourself.

If this single is any indication, Serinity is a rising star with the gift of turning raw emotion into something universally resonant.

"Went to New York" does an excellent job of capturing themes of empowerment and independence. How did these personal experiences shape this song and your broader creative journey?

My personal experiences play a big role in shaping and developing all of my music. This particular experience was unlike anything else I’ve been through—it was my first solo trip, and it completely shifted my perspective on what I wanted for my future and for myself. Writing this song helped me explore a more personal side of my songwriting.

Your storytelling is done in such a powerful manner. How did you decide that was a theme you wanted to channel into your music?

The process for this song was different from how I usually write and create music. I wanted to explore something more personal—something I truly felt connected to and wanted to share with the world. This trip to New York was the most meaningful experience of my life so far, and it naturally became the heart of the song.

The production in "Went to New York" feels ethereal yet grounded, which really pulls us into the song as a whole. Can you please tell us about your creative process in bringing this sound to life?

I wanted to create a pop song that felt edgy while still staying true to my singer-songwriter roots. It was important for me to blend those two elements—experimenting with sounds that pushed me outside my comfort zone while keeping the emotional authenticity of my style.

You’ve cited influences like the legendary Taylor Swift and Alanis Morissette. How have their approaches to storytelling shaped your own music?

I grew up listening to those singers, and they helped shape my writing and creative process tremendously. They have taught me that as a writer, it’s okay to write more personal music that feels true to me. They’ve also shown me how versatile songwriting can be—there are endless ways to tell stories and express emotion through music.

What’s next for you?

Definitely more music! I’ve got more singles on the way, and I’m hoping to release an album soon.
