A physical therapist by day and a dreamy singer by night, Pattie Lin is a new artist who impresses. In her new song, "Star Sign", co-written and produced by Austin Love, Pattie explores the complications present at the birth of a new romantic relationship. Her sweet lyrics overlay beautifully with the layering of ethereal sounds and a moving baseline. The result is an upbeat and well-done production expressing love and lust. The singer's music is not always so positive; in fact, her writing is often a retelling of her own experiences within the healthcare system.
Music has not always been Pattie’s priority, in fact, Pattie often describes herself as a stereotypical ‘good’ Asian girl, as she focused on education and career before committing to music. Now living in Los Angeles, Pattie has settled into a life of comfort and creativity. She examines her passions in both music and medicine and related topics such as health, relationships, as well as her own identity as an Asian American woman. The production surrounding her lyrics are poignant and smoothly delivered; they provide the perfect soundscape to emphasize honesty and trust. In an exclusive interview, Pattie sits down with us to discuss her relationship with music and future plans. Check it out below.
Hey Pattie, welcome back to BuzzMusic and thank you for being here. Your story really intrigues us and want to know, How do you balance your songwriting amongst your career in healthcare?
There’s definitely a push and pull between the two parts of my life. I’m always writing, jotting things down, making voice memos and all that but when it comes to finishing a project, time is essential. I find that freelance life works for me so that I can go through phases that are heavier in music, followed by a period with more patient care so that I can refresh my mind and take a break.
"Star Sign' is a great song in all regards, the production is top-notch and the lyrics tell a story that we all can relate to. I’m curious, Did you write ‘Star Sign’ about a personal experience? "Star Sign" is actually about Austin’s love life! (Mine is not so exciting.) We were catching up in the studio after maybe a month of individually busy schedules. We met with the intention of starting a new song, and as he filled me in on his roller coaster of a month, I started writing it.
You often write music about your experiences as an Asian American woman and health care professional. What roles have your race and career played in the life that you’ve lived thus far?
My grandparents lived with us growing up, which had a huge impact on the cultural values and world view that shaped my life. I often felt torn between two cultures and had trouble expressing myself. Music is my outlet for all the things I’ve left unsaid. As for health care, I learn a lot through my patients’ experiences which I think gives me a better perspective of what’s really important and what’s not. There’s also a constant stream of ethical dilemmas and I’ve used songwriting to vent about that as well!
"Star Sign" is co-written and produced by Austin Love. In the future, do you have any plans to collaborate with other artists?
Yes! I love meeting other artists and creating songs I otherwise wouldn’t write with them. I’ve got a few different projects in the works at the moment.
What can we expect to see from Pattie Lin throughout 2020?
More music and more collaborations across creative disciplines! I’m trying to branch out more this year, to push myself and grow.
