Welcome to BuzzMusic, Matt Strom! Congratulations on the release of your latest single, “Childish Drive.” We love the meaning behind this record. What moment inspired the creation of “Childish Drive?”
In a writing session with a friend, he said he wanted to write a song about being tired of the 9-5. We got to talking about how there are so many things we would rather be doing, the dreams we had as kids. From that point on it just started rolling.
How did you come to create the wonderful relationship that you have with Off The Row Studio?
It is easy when the people you meet are wonderful. Off the Row Studio made me feel like family and do to this day. They work with all these wonderful artists but still take the time to make you feel special. They are amazing and I am so grateful for everything they have done for me.
Could you please share a glimpse of the creative process that birthed “Childish Drive”?
It started with the first line, from there it grew. We knew what we wanted to write about so we built around that idea. We spend so much time in our comfort zone and we sometimes forget to realize that this is our only life to live. When we were kids we would fail and try again as many times as it took, that “Childish Drive” is what we need to find to chase our dreams. Cause it is better to try and fail than regret trying at all.
What musical and non-musical inspirations do you allow to influence the music that you create?
Musically I grew up in 90s Country, the authentic writing about life, and what we experience has always inspired me. I think that if you can write something that you sing with just an acoustic guitar and that moves people that’s where the beauty is. Garth, Stapleton, Jamey Johnson, Cody Jinks, Koe Wetzel, Read Southall, Tyler Childers, are the guys who inspire me. My non-musical inspirations are just life, the feelings I feel, as well as the people around me, I just try to capture that.
2020 has been a very challenging year for everyone. What has been keeping you inspired to create music? What advice can you give another artist who's finding it difficult to do so?
When I started writing music I was in a bad place, and music helped me through it. Music has always been the thing that has helped me through. My songs have all been inspired by what I have experienced in my life. So I stayed true to why I started writing, and what I was writing about. Life is hard all around and music and love will get us through all our struggles.
