Maria Alexa Asks For A Sign In A New Single, “Wake Me Up”

Soaring in from New York City is a singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, and dreamer Maria Alexa with her introspective and chilling new single, "Wake Me Up."

Maria Alexa has been dedicated to her craft since her very first melody, having participated in choirs, NYSSMA, all-state, all-county, piano lessons, vocal lessons, etc. What started as years of journalling and poetry turned into raw, emotional songs that help listeners feel something deep inside.

She hopes her music will impact listeners in a way that they choose to hit play during life's highest and lowest moments. Maria Alexa delivers such palpable emotion and introspective thoughts in her latest single, "Wake Me Up," the beginning of a new era for the NYC-based artist, followed by an EP later this fall.

Elaborating on the reflective new single, "Wake Me Up," we're met with gentle piano melodies and Maria Alexa's angelic and calming vocals. As she dives deeper into her lyrical content about needing a wake-up call and a splash of cold water to get her out of this rut, she drifts into the breathtaking hook that blesses us with similarities to acts like Taylor Swift.

It's an incredibly soul-soothing and engaging piece that lets listeners shut out the outside world and focus on how Maria Alexa unpacks her emotions in the utmost relatable way. She has no problem expressing her deepest emotions through cohesive lyrics and compelling poetry, and her delicate vocal delivery brings the experience to a whole other tender and dreamy aspect.

When you're feeling lost on your journey and need a wake-up call, we have something that'll do the trick. Find Maria Alexa's new single, "Wake Me Up," on all digital streaming platforms.

Welcome to BuzzMusic, Maria Alexa. We truly appreciate the vulnerability and relatable lyrics you've brought to your single, "Wake Me Up." When did you feel inspired or compelled to create this emotional piece?

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me and learning more about my new single. I've gone through a lot in the last two years, especially last year––2021 was not my year. I lost someone very close to me and my family and continued to struggle with that grief in waves. I was also dealing with a lot of changes in my personal life, and in turn, amplifying my depression and anxiety. But like any good songwriter, I turned that pain into lyrics and eventually into what is now Wake Me Up.

What was your goal for the overall sound and vibe of "Wake Me Up?" Did you work with any producers to help achieve your vision?

As always, I worked with my friend, writing partner, and producer Gamal––he's worked with me on all of my songs thus far. For the most part, I never go into songwriting with a 'vibe' in mind. I normally write all of my feelings down in my notes app/voice memo to record melodies to match any ideas I have. Oddly enough, a lot of my best songs come from me randomly...in the shower, at the gym, in my dreams, etc. It's always easier when it's not forced but rather fluid. From there, I bring my lyrics/melodies to Gamal and describe to him what exactly I'm feeling. Sometimes I'll show him songs for inspiration, but for the most part, he just gets it.

What was your songwriting process like for "Wake Me Up?" How long did it take you to write such deeply emotional and vulnerable lyrics?

Honestly, it only took one session [so about 3-4 hours?] to get the lyrics and the basic production down. The song itself, from start to finish, including creative direction, production, rollout strategy, etc., always takes longer.

What impact do you want "Wake Me Up" to have on listeners? What do you want them to take away from the song?

Like all my songs, I hope people can resonate with my lyrics and listen to it over and over again until it gives them whatever feeling they're looking for. A sense of comfort and reassurance that they're never alone when struggling with anxiety, stress, sadness, loneliness, and the list goes on.

What's next for you?

I'll be releasing a song every month until the entire project comes out! I'm super excited to get this off the ground, followed by some performances, more songwriting, and then....maybe an album.
