If you’ve ever found yourself dodging red flags in the name of love, Isabella Chiarini’s latest single, “Gotta Be,” is your new anthem. Released on January 8, 2025, this empowering pop gem takes a no-nonsense approach to toxic relationships and says exactly what we’ve all needed to hear: it’s okay to walk away.
Right from the opening notes, “Gotta Be” hooks you with its infectious melody, showcasing Isabella’s knack for blending heartfelt storytelling with undeniable pop appeal. But it’s the lyrics that hit hardest. Chiarini doesn’t just scratch the surface—she dives headfirst into the messy, manipulative dynamics that many endure but few openly discuss. The song expertly dissects the kind of partner who wears a hero’s mask while quietly pulling the strings, reminding listeners that they don’t need anyone else to define their happiness.
“Staying in a situation that doesn’t fulfill you will never be the solution,” Chiarini declares, and her conviction radiates through every lyric and beat. It’s a powerful sentiment wrapped in an irresistible pop package, co-written with heavyweights Teresa Nocita and Brian Melo (yes, the Canadian Idol champ himself). Their combined talent brings a polished yet emotionally raw edge to the track, proving that pop music can be both fun and fiercely introspective.
The beauty of “Gotta Be” lies in its relatability.
Chiarini opts for universal language over hyper-specific details, allowing listeners to project their own experiences onto the song. Whether you’re untangling yourself from a toxic romance, a draining friendship, or any situation that clips your wings, this track feels like the soundtrack to reclaiming your power.
Isabella’s journey to this moment is just as compelling as the music she creates. A Hamilton native, she’s been chasing her passion for music since the age of eight, fueled by the unyielding determination of her single father. After years of vocal training with the esteemed Teresa Nocita and a transformative stint with Nashville’s PCG Universal, Chiarini has emerged as an artist who’s unafraid to bare her soul. Her music is a tribute to resilience, empowerment, and the healing power of self-expression.
With “Gotta Be,” Isabella Chiarini solidifies her place in the pop sphere as a voice worth listening to. It’s the kind of song that’ll have you dancing in your living room one moment and reflecting on your boundaries the next. Whether you’re a seasoned Chiarini fan or a first-time listener, this track is a must-add to your playlist.
Isabella Chiarini isn’t just making music—she’s creating a movement. And with “Gotta Be,” she’s reminding all of us that we’ve got to be our own heroes.
“Gotta Be” dives into the complexities of toxic relationships. Can you share what inspired you to tackle such a personal and universal theme and how you hope the song resonates with your listeners?
I decided to tackle this theme because it was personally happening to me. I always want the lyrics of my songs to be relatable to my listeners and I feel writing authentically is the best way to do that. Everyone has been in a tough relationship at least once in their life, whether it be with a significant other, family member, or friend.
This song dives into the feelings you fight when you’re in these situations, like whether or not you should stay because you know they are bad for you, but you can’t help it. I hope when someone listens to this song they can relate to it and end it feeling like they aren’t alone. Everyone goes through these things but it’s all about handling it in the best way for you.
Your music blends pop with various subgenres, creating a unique sound. How do you approach crafting songs that balance mainstream appeal with your distinct artistic identity?
This song, in particular, was inspired a lot by The Weeknd, Chappell Roan, and Dua Lipa. When I write I always try to take inspiration from mainstream artists and put my twist on it to keep it relevant but authentic. I wanted this song to have an 80s/disco vibe but kept it relevant by keeping these popular artists in mind.
You’ve worked with esteemed collaborators like Teresa Nocita and Brian Melo. How have these collaborations shaped your songwriting process and overall growth as an artist?
I’ve been lucky enough to work with great people who always push me to do my best. Teresa and Brian tell me when I do good and when I need to improve so I can push myself to constantly be better. Working with them has boosted my confidence, and they have helped shape the artist I am today.
You’ve mentioned drawing inspiration from your father’s resilience and your own life experiences. How does your personal journey influence the stories you tell through your music?
My father inspires me a lot to try new things and get out of my comfort zone in everything. I try to take that into my songwriting, which I feel I did this time because I have never released a song with this vibe before. The storytelling in my music always comes from personal experience of something that has happened to me or something I’ve seen happen around me. I feel that’s the way my music comes out the best and most relatable.
Empowerment and authenticity are key themes in your music. What advice would you give young adults struggling to embrace their own individuality and make bold life choices, as reflected in “Gotta Be”?
It is definitely easier said than done, but I always say to live your life for you. If you are living a life you love and feel good about, then you should continue. Living your life trying to please everyone else will not serve you in the end. If you’re happy, you’ve won in life.
