The multi-faceted musician takes you on a sonic journey you won’t easily forget.
Born just outside the sprawling musical metropolis that is New York City, Heartour founder Jason Young grew up in an environment rich with eclectic musical influences. It would only be a matter of time before the budding musician moved to the Big Apple, but when Young made the move, he made sure he did so in an extraordinary way. After forming the successful indie pop outfit The Ruse, he toured worldwide with them as opening acts for Muse, sharpening his skills as a performer and artist before creating the Heartour moniker. A true artist to the core, we can’t wait to see the next step in his musical journey.
Under the Heartour moniker, Heartour has diverse influences on his environment. New York City is a global melting pot of cultures, reflected in Heartour’s approach. Now based in Venice Beach, Heartour continues to push his limits, evolve and create. Utilizing a sound he describes as “indie psychedelic pop rock,” Heartour invites us to listen and enjoy the music and awaken our minds with their immersive releases. There’s seemingly no limit to Heartour’s imagination, but that’s resulted in an approach that makes releases feel fresh every time.
Featured on his standout 2022 album release “Years,” Heartour describes “All They Want” as “a crunchy, emotional expedition.” The instrumental performance instantly transports us to Heartour’s world of psychedelic wonder, featuring staggering, fast-paced drums and well-placed distorted synths. Heartour’s vocals make the experience, though, as perfectly distorted vocals make it feel like he talks to you in a dream, close but slightly out of reach. “All They Want” also features a fascinating music video that features Heartour’s obscured face and different cutouts of objects that phase in and out of color. Altogether, “All They Want” does many things well but most pertinently transports you to a fully immersive world of psychedelic goodness.
Heartour’s release, “All They Want,” is an immersive experience that invites you to join him on a journey of psychedelic goodness. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Heartour! We loved “All They Want,” we have to know! What was the inspiration behind this release?
Thank you! This song evolved from a synth bass jam that became two songs on my album, Years. The lyrics for “All They Want” arrived as a stream-of-consciousness improvisation with the music. Sometimes, I have a clear idea about my songs, and sometimes, the meaning reveals itself to me long after the recording is finished. This one is one of the rare ones that has yet to reveal itself fully. That’s the fun thing about creating music for me. I don’t always know what it means or where it comes from.
What was the inspiration behind the music video, and what was your favorite part of bringing your vision for the music video to life?
I’m a big fan of collage artist Laura Matikainen and was thrilled when she agreed to come on board to bring this video to life. I like what she came up with. My favorite parts are the corn people and the spiral staircase. It’s as abstract and surreal as I hoped it would be.
What’s been your favorite thing about being a musician and being able to release your music?
I am super grateful that I get to do this. I still get a rush from stumbling across a lyric or musical idea for a song and then seeing that through to a finished piece of recorded music. Creating is such an intrinsic part of who I am that I always return when I take breaks from music. It’s my toolbox and safety blanket for making sense of my life and our world.
What do you want your audience to feel when they listen to a Heartour release?
I want the listener to feel something. It doesn’t have to be the same feelings that I think, but feeling something is always the goal.
What’s next for Heartour? Can we expect to hear more new music soon, and is there anything you want to say to your fans?
Thank you for listening. These things take time, but I’ll be getting back into the studio soon, and another album will be. If this tune is the first time you’ve heard of mine, I’d love it if you would also consider checking out some of my older albums. R U IN, Submarine Sounds, and Ate are my favorites.
