Get Into the World of Monotronic

Welcome to BuzzMusic Ramsey! What's the story behind "Monotronic"? Monotronic is my brainchild, that I started back in 2016 with a loose collective of NYC based musicians. It started out as a series of fun jams and gradually developed into something more focused. I write most of the music myself, but also collaborate with other musicians, both within and outside the core group of musicians that I formed the band with.

You have accomplished some very impressive things; traveling through Asia and Southeast Asia, backpacking around the world and studying in Indonesia. How do you translate these experiences into your music?

Life experience is a really hard thing to quantify! For sure I have picked up on some world music along the way. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a year in India studying Indian classical music in a quiet university town called Shantiniketan a few hours outside Calcutta. During that year I came across some pretty serious musicians...and it was during this time I picked up lap steel guitar (played in the Indian tradition). You refer to "Monotrronic" as a concept. Can you explain what this means? Monotonic is a concept whereby each instrument can be heard as a continuation of the other and the music sounds as one distinct whole, emanating from a single source. It doesn't always work, but that's the approach and end goal I'm chasing! "In Your Head" is one of many good songs on your self-titled album. What inspired you to write this song?

I think it was inspired by an EDM set I was listening to on Youtube from Burning Man...and over time it kinda took on a life of its own. It's really about the fine line between understanding and misunderstanding that often occurs when we are in close relationships. What can we expect to see from Monotronic through 2020?

I'm working on 4 singles that are currently being mixed by Michael Brauer. They should be released about a month apart starting in March/April.
