Given the current state of the world, artists must use their platforms to address social and political issues, and FISHLORD, formerly known as Nafets, exemplifies this commitment.
As a Trinidadian-American first-generation immigrant, FISHLORD’s latest musical direction offers an introspective glimpse into his upbringing amidst alternative music. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive sounds of 2000s rock, he infuses them with a fresh, contemporary twist, resulting in an innovative, versatile, and instantly captivating style.
Growing up, the hardcore and metal scene allowed him to express his feelings and defy the expectations of being a third-culture kid. Now, he embraces this sound to convey these emotions, offering listeners a candid and intimate glimpse into his journey of self-discovery and the hurdles he's encountered.
He returns with ‘BROKEN,’ the penultimate release before he unveils his raucous maxi EP ‘YOU LOOK LIKE YOU TREAT LIKE DOGS LIKE PEOPLE,’ which dives deeper into his roots of nu-metal, punk, and rock genres.
‘BROKEN,’ written in late 2023 during a time of deep reflection on the hardships faced by young people in Gaza, emerges as a synthesis of the contrasting sonic landscapes that encapsulate FISHLORD's diverse musical influences, spanning from System of a Down to Alex G.
As a teacher by day, FISHLORD's commitment to using his platform for social commentary is evident in this track. He sees it as his duty to express his sadness and frustration towards the suffering in the Middle East, and ‘BROKEN’ is a testament to this mission. The song is a powerful piece of music and a call to awareness and empathy.
“I believe every educator should be concerned with the fates of young people everywhere, and at that moment, I felt dismayed and helpless at how best to support them,” says FISHLORD. “In bringing the song together, I recruited my dear friend, Goodie, for a verse. I’ve always respected the thoughtfulness and care with which they move through the world, and I knew I could count on them for a beautiful and meaningful contribution. Releasing it almost 6 months later, my heart goes out to the young people still suffering and all those educators and students who are trying to advocate for them.”
FISHLORD, alongside his close friend and collaborator Goodie, skilfully crafts a sonic landscape that is both haunting and beautiful. Opening with gentle melodic rock instrumentation, the track creates a serene atmosphere that lulls listeners into a sense of calm. This peaceful introduction starkly contrasts what follows as the song erupts into a powerful screamo chorus.
This sudden shift in tone mirrors the emotional volatility and intensity of the subject matter, drawing listeners into the depths of FISHLORD’s introspective lyrics. The song delves into the heartache and helplessness experienced in the face of widespread suffering, particularly in the context of Gaza. His words resonate with a universal sense of grief, making the song relatable to anyone who has felt the weight of the world's injustices.
As FISHLORD prepares to release his highly anticipated EP, 'YOU LOOK LIKE YOU TREAT YOUR DOGS LIKE PEOPLE,' 'BROKEN' stands as a promising indication of what's to come and solidifies FISHLORD's place as a rising star in the alternative music scene.
Marking his debut EP under his new moniker, ‘YOU LOOK LIKE YOU TREAT YOUR DOGS LIKE PEOPLE,’ is a vibrant tapestry of rock genres, blending his affinity for hardcore alternative music with a contemporary flair. While not steering to far from his acclaimed work as Nafets (which garnered millions of streams and prominent sync placements like The CW, Netflix, and Hulu), FISHLORD's latest venture represents an evolution rather than a complete overhaul.
By infusing his signature sound with elements of hardcore alternative music, he creates an elevated version of himself, staying true to his roots while exploring new creative territories. This EP promises to be a thrilling journey for fans, showcasing FISHLORD's growth as an artist and his unwavering commitment to pushing musical boundaries.
‘BROKEN’ is available across all streaming platforms now, while his EP ‘YOU LOOK LIKE YOU TREAT YOUR DOGS LIKE PEOPLE’ will be available from 14th June.
