BB Mike's musical journey started in Hartford, Connecticut, where he fell in love with jazz, rock, and hip-hop. After studying music in Colorado, he went to Los Angeles to pursue his solo career, blending his diverse influences into a unique sound.
His latest track, "Within," showcases BB Mike's talent for creating laid-back, groove-filled beats. It might be his most relaxing song yet. It was written at the height of the pandemic in 2020 when BB felt inspired to sample his friend Mike's guitar videos. With a little production expertise, "Within" was born, and there's much more where this lo-fi tune came from.

Welcome to Buzz, BB Mike! We're loving the chill vibes of your new track "Within." What inspired you to create such a relaxing and feel-good tune?
Thanks for the kind words and for having me! Happy to be here. My love for lofi and chill music in general inspired me to make this tune. At the time, I was alone in my friend’s apartment, and it was a beautiful summer day in Colorado, so that also played a part in the process.
"Within" has a very distinct lo-fi sound. How does this track represent your evolution as an artist?
This track returns to my roots of Jazz, Hip Hop, and Lofi inspirations & projects. Lately, I’ve been DJing a lot and making a lot of electronic tunes, but this song, in particular, has been on the back burner for a while and stays true to my original roots of studying jazz in high school and college.
Can you tell us about the process of sampling the guitar melodies for "Within"? What inspired you to do that?
I was inspired by J Dilla and Knxwledge when I sat down and chopped up my friend’s guitar playing. They are so unique in their sampling techniques, and they have inspired me for years. The original audio is in an odd meter, but I thought it’d sound great in a 4/4 even meter.
We heard that "Within" was born during the pandemic. How did that time influence your creative process?
Yeah, it was a difficult time during the pandemic, so I focused on the power of music and the hope it always gives me through hard times. With this mindset, I could channel my emotions into the composition, and Within was born.
What do you hope listeners feel or experience when they hear "Within?"
I hope listeners feel relaxed and at peace with the world around them when listening to Within. Or maybe even a melancholy sort of feeling that reminds them of times past but may be slightly bittersweet.
