Thank you for sharing such a vulnerable piece of yourself in "See You Again." With such a deeply personal and emotional tribute to your brother-in-law, can you please share more about translating such a profound and private experience into a song?
I honestly didn't know how to process my emotions at the time. I was emotionally in a very dark place; the house was eerily quiet. There was such a feeling of emptiness throughout the whole house, but walking by his room and seeing it left the way it was left, such a feeling of sadness and hopelessness if that makes sense.
I expected him to walk through the door at any second but then realized that he would never return home. It was a feeling unlike anything I have ever experienced. I have felt grief and loss in the past, but this was far more profound. I felt stuck like I didn't even know how to feel. I guess I was still in shock. I then stared around his room and noticed a pen and paper on his desk.
That's when I started writing; I sat at his desk and wrote this song. I never intended to do so, but within 30 minutes, I noticed that I had something that could be good. I showed my family the first verse and chorus, and I knew I had something special from their reactions.
How did you navigate the fine line between personal grief and creating music that resonates with a broader audience?
It was difficult. I wanted to put my emotions onto paper, but I also wanted something people could connect to and enjoy. But with how clouded my thoughts were then, I had to be careful and ensure that my writing was comprehensible and musically attractive. Luckily, I could do that one, too, and the response has been very positive so far.
"See You Again" began at your brother-in-law's house. Can you elaborate on how the physical space influenced the creative process, and did being in that environment add a unique layer to the emotional depth of the song?
Being back in his room felt so eerie to me then. It felt so empty. I sat with him in that room only a few days prior, and everything was normal. Writing the song in his room added another layer of emotion to the song, especially with how the room was left just how he left it. It felt like he was still there with me.
Your advice to not take loved ones for granted is a powerful message in "See You Again." How do you hope this song impacts listeners who may be going through their own experiences of loss, and what role do you believe music plays in helping people process and navigate their emotions?
Music is a universal language. It crosses all cultural, political, and religious barriers. No matter who you are, music is designed as a tool of human expression. So, for those who listen to my song, it gives them comfort in not being alone in their experiences. That is what music has always been for me: a way to connect with and process my emotions. I hope that my music connects with my listeners in the same way.
The review mentions your plans to continue writing music and that you have a story to tell. How do you envision your musical journey unfolding, and are there specific themes or messages you are eager to explore in your upcoming projects?
I plan to continue to write music that connects with my audience. I would love to connect with other musicians as well. I love performing, and I do not plan to stop soon. I am working on a few new projects, although I am still determining exactly when those will be released. My listeners can expect to hear more about my life experiences and important things to me.
I want to show my audience that I am more than just the emotion that brought success to "See You Again." Instead, I am a family man and a relentlessly hard worker; most people can relate to that. I hope to reach a point where I can inspire musicians of my generation and those who come after me.
