Welcome to Buzz, FreeChains! "Triumphant" is an incredibly powerful remix and gives your audience a personal taste of your life and artistry. What inspired you to take on Rick Ross' track and put your own spin on it?
Thanks for having me back. Triumphant is actually my song that added Rick Ross to the remix. Adding Rick Ross to the remix felt like a perfect fit because he's one of my favorite artists to hear as a feature. His voice and presence in a song give it a feeling of confidence and power that not many other artists can. The biggest example is Richer Than I Ever Been and the production behind that project. So, if I was going to remix a song that's about being on top of the world, Rick Ross was the perfect fit for it.
The production of "Triumphant" is captivating. How did your collaboration with Anno Domini come about, and what was the creative process like?
I had definitely done plenty of songs with Anno Domini before this and was happy to collaborate with him again. At the time, this was going to be a part of a two-song pack called The Return that would include Ain't Goin (the 4th song off of my album Dreams) and the original Triumphant. The goal of this song was to create this aura-filled return that felt like winning a championship game. I had a few other options for beats, but when I heard this one with the trumpets and the epic piano sample (not to mention how the build-up alone could get anyone excited), I couldn't wait to get on this beat. Saying things like "With no people I can call and the odds against you gotta ball" and "Thirsty for clicks while I'm sipping from my glass," the song gives a feeling of success and accomplishment.
You've described yourself as a "legend in the making." What does success look like to you, and how do you plan to leave your mark on the industry?
My image of success is having my music bring authenticity back into the forefront of hip hop. I make it very clear that I am not a drug dealer, criminal, or anything of that nature. Yet people believe, "If I'm not like this, then I can't rap." "I'm from the suburbs, so I don't have a story to tell." If I can be one of the focal points to allow others to share a different story, to be proud of what they are, and to break the boundaries of what others say they can't be, then I've succeeded and made my mark on the industry. I consider myself a "legend in the making" because I see my potential but understand that I have a long way to go before claiming that spot as a difference-maker in the genre.
"Triumphant" feels like an anthem for underdogs. Who are some artists or individuals who have inspired you to keep pushing forward in your own journey?
I wouldn't say "pushing forward in my own journey" is the right phrase for it. Rather, these artists helped me evolve my sound into what it is today. A few would be Kendrick Lamar and how open his heart and mind are to his music. His recent album Mr Morale and The Big Steppers and even 6:16 in LA were included in his recent beef with Drake. I have to admit that battle was one of the things that kept me invigorated and excited about rap music. Two other examples are Lil Wayne and J Cole. These two have some of the most competitive pens in modern-day hip-hop. Their penmanship and how layered their rhymes are is something that never ceases to amaze me.
Looking ahead, what can fans expect from FreeChains in the future? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations we should be excited about?
I can't lie to you. Right now has been a very big transitional period for me. With my recent graduation from college and my Class Dismissed EP to celebrate (which is on streaming platforms right now) I have been in the midst of asking myself "what's next" and where do I want to take this music. So, as of this moment, I don't know. It's crazy to say, but it's the truth. That doesn't mean I have nothing else to release. I have been honing my craft for as much time as I'm allowed to. So when I know what's next, trust me. You will know.
